Simply put, Pioneer's DEH-P7700MP is one heck of a CD receiver! Its stunning Organic EL display, which features full-motion animations and 3D graphics, is a joy to look at. And its built-in high power, wide range of format compatibility, and extensive sound control features make it a delight to have in your car.

You'll never run out of things to listen to with the DEH-P7700MP. Like any CD receiver, it'll play your standard and home-burned discs. But it's in the digital media realm that it really stands out from the crowd. Not only will it play discs loaded with MP3 and WMA, it'll play AAC files, too. It'll feel like your entertainment options are unlimited! And the faceplate features a 7-way rotary commander, an invaluable tool for sorting through your music files, so you can find your favorite tracks and albums quickly.

Pioneer packed this receiver with a MOSFET50 amp for full-force playback. Meanwhile, Easy EQ lets you dial in a preset EQ curve for a quick sound fix, or fine-tune with the 3-band parametric EQ. For a more engaging listening experience, you can also activate Sound Focus EQ, which blocks the mids and highs from the rear speakers, thereby pulling the soundstage to the front seats, right where you want it. To maximize performance, low- and high-pass filters are built into the receiver.

System expansion is definitely in the cards, too. Three sets of preamp outputs are just waiting to accommodate external amps. The DEH-P7700MP is also satellite radio-compatible; add an XM or SIRIUS tuner, antenna, and subscription, and you'll open up a whole new, coast-to-coast entertainment experience. If terrestrial radio is your thing, you'll be amazed by the Supertuner IIID+. Yep, Pioneer took their world-famous AM/FM tuner and made it even better!

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Pioneer DEH-P7700MP

One word IMACULATE. I had a much older Pioneer HU and I have 2 6.5" 2- way Ifinity Referance, 2 6.5" component Infinity Referance, and 2 10" Ifinity Referance pushed by a Sony X-plode 2100 watt amp. So I got this deck and well... I already said it.

Great MP3

Written By OJ, Texas on Wednesday, January 18, 2006

This is my fourth Pioneer. This plays MP3's better than other higher priced (ahem, Alpine)players. The notorious 3 or 4 second gap that others need to scan mp3 cd's is virtually nonexistant. What usually interrupted a good DJ cd is now nothing more than a half second quip. This thing rocks! The display stuff is nice too, but the utility of the unit is exceptional.

I've had this HU for about a year now and I'd say that I do like it a lot. It's good for mp3 cds and gets pretty good radio reception. It's biggest draw back for me is that to use an ipod with it you have to buy a $100 cable which does allow control of the ipod while listening and charging but the control is soo totally backwards, akward and counter intuitive compared to the click wheel. The controls aren't even close or similar for that matter. They are also unbareably slow. I only have a 6gb ipod mini and to select a particular artist among only about 200 you have to press the joystick up or down once artist at a time and it takes it a couple seconds to display the next one. Also it does display one piece of track info at a time but it won't scroll it and starts displaying it IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN. So most tracks you can only see the first word or possibly less. The pioneer ipod adapter could have been *much* better considering the HU already has an input that mimics the ipod click wheel. I'd say it's a terrible kluge. I highly do NOT recommend this HU if you plan on connecting an ipod directly. I'm considering selling the ipod cable and getting the H-K drive+play unit.

To be honest this HU is Swwweattt, and like the other reviews i must agree that this thing is VERY hard to keep your eyes off of. i can be driving on the interstate trying to wath the little "movies" but in all its the best hu ive ever had and also my second pioneer. i love the MP3/WMA/WAV files menus and how well this unit lets you navigate through the folders and songs. also im a tweaker and this hu lets u do alot of it. i would recomend this unit to anyone who likes flashy hu's and or blue displays the unit really brings life to a car, and it makes ur dash look VERY expensive...

Best Bang For The Buck

Written By Jamie, Corning, New York on Tuesday, December 27, 2005

I have owned this HU for a little over a week now(merry christmas to me) and it by far the best quality for the price you pay. To find all of these features in an Alpine or Kenwood you can easily tack on up to another $200. I have read many of the other reviews and it is my reason for writing this one. I have found that others who have reviewed this HU have experienced problems, but none of which are that of the HU but the lack of fully reading the manual.
1. Mention of HU not having a way to turn it off.
solution: Hold source button and unit powers down as all pioneer HUs
2.Display reversing color.
solution: power HU down and hold rotary dial down and access menu, turn rotary dial till reversing is displayed and press rotary dial again and it will switch the reversing off.
These are just a couple of examples found in these reviews and are not ment to provoke anyone. The bottom line is that if you cant figure something out it is almost always in the manual.
The performance is superb with this HU because you have so much control over the sound(Eq, Xover points, Curves ect...) The display is a little bright at night but its not like looking directly into the sun or anything. It plays just about any format you can throw at it and the 2.2 volt preouts arent even close to being an issue, they feed my Kicker amp quite well.In closing all of my head units have been pioneer and i am a huge fan, though you may be able to find a HU with better sound quality I can almost gaurentee you will not find it in the price range of this HU.And it is not likely to find a HU that will outlast a pioneer, I have NEVER had a pioneer HU fail me mechanically or electrically.

Outstanding piece of equipment.

I installed this head unit in my 1997 Ford Explorer. My vehicle made installation a little difficult due to the factory amplifier; however, with crutchfield's mastersheets and harnesses, installation was a breeze. Now as far as my satisfaction with this head unit goes, I am shocked by the sounds coming from my speakers. I installed 2 pairs of 6x8 3-way Pioneer speakers to my previous factory configuration and they sounded awful. Now with this head unit I have rich-tight bass and amazingly clear mids and highs. With this head unit and these speakers teamed up with an Alpine MRD-M501 amp (575 watts rms at 2 ohms) pushing a 12" JBL GTO1220 I am in car audio heaven. Pioneer has done an excellent job with this head unit. Its display is vibrant and bright, but NOT too bright in my opinion. Navigation is quick and easy. Features are endless. I would recommend this to anyone over Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Sony and any other brand.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have this unit in my 1995 Chevy S-10 and I love it. The controls can be difficult to work but after playing around with it for a little while it is not that difficult to figure out.

My unit plays everything I have put into it. That includes regular cd's, cd-r's, cd-rw's, and even cd's burnt as data discs. Have never had a problem with it.

I have this unit connected to my system which includes 2 Kole Audio shallow 10's amped by a 1440 watt amp. This unit is an excellent compliment to my system and I would reccommend it to anyone.

Awesome Unit. Pioneer all the way.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I thought this unit was superb. It plays all of my CDs, including CD-Rs and CD-RWs. I dont think his computer was formatting them correctly when he was rewrting the songs, but my unit plays CD-RWs Perfectly. The menus are hard to navigate and configure for a while. But once you learn how to use everything, it is much easier. As with all Pioneer units, there is no clear way to turn it off. The best you can do is turn the volume all the way down, or connect a toggle switch on the red wire, and turn it off when not in use. As long as the ignition wire is hooked up, it will retain all its settings, and the time (which I haven't figured out how to change, not that Ive tried or anything...) If you are going to spend this much on a radio, you might as well save up and get a LCD DVD player, its worth the extra $700.

Pioneer DEH-P7700MP

Written By MikeDVB, Indianapolis, IN on Tuesday, November 08, 2005

I absolutely love this head unit. I have noticed in the other reviews that others complain about the inverting display... If you go into the settings you can turn that and the feature demo off. Without turning the demo mode off the CD player is VERY distracting - but one of the first things it says in the book - and it even says it on the display when you turn the CD player off - is how to turn the demo modes off. With the player off you hit Preset 5 then 6 to turn both demo modes off.

The control knob on the front is very nice - the faceplate does move a tad when you use it - but I find that it is more convenient to use the controller.

I like the Battery Voltage display and the MP3 player capabilities. The one major downside that I have found is that it cannot play CD-RWs.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

when deciding whether to purchase this head unit or not, i read the other reviews. all those who said that the screen was too bright i must agree with.Even with the brightness set on a lower level, the alternating between a darker and lighter background can be quite distracting. the subwoofer controls and equalizer can be somewhat tricky to navigate to begin with, but after about 3 days of trying it became easier. Some have said that using the remote is more convenient and i must agree. playback of my cd's hasn't been very smooth either. I gave this head unit 4 stars, but i really think it deserves 3. My next head unit will probably be an Alpine. I must admit that the 7700 is a very sleak design.

Pros and Cons

Written By RJ, Spring Hill, TN on Tuesday, September 13, 2005

This Pioneer is an excellent in-dash receiver. The options for what you can display is awesome, although at night the blue lights can be bright. You can dim the lights, but the light around the knob can not be. Also the blue background light flashs during operation. There might be a way to shut that off but I have not found out how yet.

I was impressed with the 7 way knob. I found it to be better than I thought. It does not have very much play with it at all, although the CD face moves ever so slightly while using it.

I love the subwoofer controls and the options for what you are able to do. It works wonders with my 12" subwoofer. You can adjust the bass level for the sub and change the application if the sub is reversed in the box.

The installation was simple and the step-by-step instructions provided for my 1994 Olds were extremely helpful.

For anyone who is looking for an outstanding CD player with alot of options and a cool display, this is the CD player for you.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit into my 2005 Ford F-150. The head unit sits up high in the dash and is angled upwards slightly. This caused a problem with not being able to read the display in the daytime, and the lights around the control being too bright and distracting at nighttime. You can dim the display, but not the other control lights. I read the other reviews on this product before buying it that stated the same thing, but thought maybe they were being picky, they weren't.

My other major complaint about this unit is the display when you are able to see it. I wasn't able to set it on just one picture or the clock and have it stay that way. It likes to invert the colors of the display, like a screen saver, which to me was very distracting. If the unit is mounted low in a car, maybe this wouldn't be so much of a problem, but it is very distracting when driving at night in a high dash mounting location like mine.

I also did not like the multifunction knob. It felt rather cheap, perhaps due to the fact that it has to move in four directions as well as turning. It also took three or four good turns to adjust the volume from one extreme to the other. I prefer to have full range volume adjustment with one movement.

On the positive side, the unit has good power, good features, and good sound. It was easy to use once I read the owners manual. I just could not stand the flashing lights in my dash, so I had to return it.

Nice Unit But Lacking A Critical Feature

Written By Charles, Raleigh, NC on Wednesday, August 10, 2005
Installed in a 1999 Dodge Caravan
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As far as installation, everything worked out great. Audio performance is great. I still gave it middle of the road rating because it lacked (to me) a critical feature. I have spent a great amount of time collecting Rock'N'Roll LPs and 45s. I clean them up with software and remaster them for my audio collection. With MP3 I can put a lot of songs on a CD and drive a long time without having to worry with changing my music disc.
The feature list says it plays MP3 ID tags and it does....one at a time (Title OR Artist OR...the other ID tags). I assumed it would allow you to select which ones you could display while the song is playing. All I wanted was Title and Artist to scroll. If I missed that lack of feature before I bought it shame on me. This is a warning for anyone that is purchasing it for that reason.

Great!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased this deck and it is great. I also installed a pair of pioneer 3 way 6 1/2 inch for my doors and a pair of 4 way 6 3/4 that sound great. The mp3 cd playback is great although I'm still trying to find a happy medium between file size and quality. So far 192 kbps is the best for me.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I found this HU after a trip to tweeters(high end audio shop) although they had the "premier" version. I liked all the controls...etc. So I ordered the 7700MP.

The Pros:
*it is very easy to use.
*there are a lot of different adjustments.
*the 7-way Rotary Commander is very tight and doesn't feel cheap like other HU's out there.
*Very fast mp3 loading and tracking.
*Clock can be displayed white HU is on and will disapear when changing songs but will come back after a certain length of inactivity.

The Cons:
*Display can be hard to read with certain sunglasses and under certain light(with or without sunglasses).
*Radio preset buttons are very small.
*2.2 volt preamp outputs is lame (if you are willing to spend more and buy from a local audio shop then the premier version of this HU have 4volt preamp outputs.
*Single color display (athough it is a VERY nice shade of blue)

All in all, I am very happy with this HU and do not regret chosing this over other HU's on the market.

To me this HU is perfect. I like the idea that there are additional products available for it and all coincide very well. It's great to have the option to listen to my ipod, xmradio, FM/AM, or if I want, some CDs and with no problems at all.

Lord of the Radio

Written By Tuned95, Anniston, Alabama on Tuesday, June 07, 2005

From the bright blue light all the way to the Mosfet 50x4, I'd say Pioneer just has to be the best in head unit's. I have 4-12" Pioneer T306's all DVC built in a wall behind the front seats using 2 SPL enclosures stacked on one another and then walled in and this unit gives me the best control over them and the rest of the audio speakers. You can change the Q factor on your LOWS MIDS & HIGHS with just simply a few presses of a button. I have never had clearer more defined sound until this unit came out and for that I thank Pioneer!

Features

Deep Blue OEL Display: The deep blue OEL (Organic Electroluminescent) display features incredible brightness, clear readability, wide-angle viewing and full-motion 3D graphics. Because OEL creates its own electroluminescent light, its brightness is resistant to washing out in sunlight.

Entertainment Display Modes: You can choose from the following Entertainment Display Modes:

  • Background Visual: In Background Visual mode, you can select one of the following background visuals: Background Visual 1 (crashing waves), Background Visual 2 (moving strings of text), Background Visual 3 (streak of light), or Background Visual 4 (moving patterns of light).
  • Background Picture: In Background Picture mode, you can select one of the following background pictures: Background Picture 1 (vertical and horizontal lines of light), Background Picture 2 (different geometric shapes), Background Picture 3 (illuminated arrows), or Background Picture 4 (dolphins).
  • Level Meter: In Level Meter mode, two analog VU meters are displayed.
  • Level Indicator: In Level Indicator mode, you can select one of the following level indicators: Level Indicator 1 (scrolling vertical bars of light) or Level Indicator 2 (scrolling squares of light).
  • ASL Effect Level: This mode displays the Automatic Sound Levelizer effect level.
  • Battery Voltage: This mode displays the current battery voltage.
  • Movie Screen: In Movie Screen mode, you can select one of the following movie screens: Movie Screen 1 (vehicles racing through the city streets) or Movie Screen 2 (jigsaw puzzle and swimming dolphins).

Display Brightness: The display brightness can be adjusted from 0 to 15.

Demo Modes: This unit has a Reverse Demo Mode and a Feature Demo Mode. In Reverse Demo Mode, if you do not perform an operation for a period of 30 seconds, the display begins reversing colors. It continues reversing colors every 10 seconds until a button is pushed. When the unit is turned off, the Feature Demo Mode is activated. The Feature Demo Mode displays the unit's different features and capabilities using moving graphics.

7-Way Rotary Commander: The 7-Way Rotary Commander is like a musical joystick, allowing you to control 90% of the unit's functions and features.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output.

Satellite Radio Tuner Compatible: This unit can control an optional Pioneer XM or SIRIUS tuner (sold separately).

Compatible with Optional TV Tuner: This head unit can control an optional Pioneer TV tuner (not supplied).

Easy EQ Curves: This model has "SUPER BASS", "POWERFUL", "NATURAL", "VOCAL", "CUSTOM", and "FLAT" preset EQ curves. The "CUSTOM" curve is one that you create and store in memory. A separate "CUSTOM" curve can be created and stored in memory for each source.

EQ-EX: This feature allows you to boost the current EQ setting for even more powerful sound.

3-Band Parametric Equalizer: This unit includes a 3-band parametric EQ with Selectable Q Factor. You may select a low (40, 80, 100 or 160Hz), mid (200, 500, 1k or 2kHz) and high frequency (3.15k, 8k, 10k or 12.5kHz) to boost or cut within a range of -6dB to +6dB. The Q factor (slope of the boost or cut) may be selected from one of the following four options: 2N (narrow), 1N, 1W and 2W (wide). Selecting a narrow (steep) Q factor results in frequencies around the center frequency to be affected less by the boost or cut than they are with a wide Q factor. This feature is useful for taming frequency response problems caused by the dimensions, materials and speaker locations of a vehicle.

Selectable Bass and Treble Cut-off Frequencies: The cut-off frequencies for the bass and treble controls can be set independently of the 3-band parametric equalizer adjustments. The bass cut-off frequency can be set to 40Hz, 63Hz, 100Hz or 160Hz. The treble cut-off frequency can be set to 2.5kHz, 4kHz, 6.3kHz or 10kHz. The bass and treble controls have an adjustment range of -6 to +6.

Automatic Sound Levelizer (ASL): During driving, road noise in the car changes according to the driving speed and road conditions. The Automatic Sound Levelizer monitors the road noise and automatically increases the unit's volume level, if the road noise becomes greater. The sensitivity of this feature can be set to one of five levels (low, mid-low, mid, mid-high, or high).

Adjustable Loudness: You can select "Low", "Mid" or "High" for different levels of loudness compensation.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

High-pass Filter: When you don't want sound in the subwoofer frequency range output from the front and rear speakers, you may activate the built-in high-pass filter. You may select a filter frequency of 50Hz, 80Hz, or 125Hz.

Subwoofer/Non-fading Preouts: In addition to the front and rear preamp outputs, there is one set of outputs that may be set for "subwoofer" or "non-fading" output. When set to "non-fading", the signal is full range and the output level is user selectable from -6 to +6. When set to "subwoofer", the outputs are non-fading, and they may be set for normal or reverse phase, 50Hz/80Hz/125Hz low-pass output, and the level is user selectable from -6 to +6.

Rear Channel Output: You can choose to use the rear channel output (speaker and preout) for full-range speaker or subwoofer. If you select "subwoofer", you can connect a 4-ohm subwoofer directly to each rear speaker lead without using an external amplifier.

Supertuner IIID+ Enhanced Performance Tuner: This version of Pioneer's tuner technology takes FM and AM radio performance to a new level. Called Supertuner IIID+, it delivers significant improvement in the following areas:

  • cancels FM multi-path noise often found in downtown areas, resulting in a much cleaner signal
  • cancels AM noise, which can occur when you're driving where the AM signal is weakest
  • improves sensitivity, locking in on the signals from your selected stations
  • improves the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and decreases distortion, especially when the signal is weak. The result is a higher-quality signal.

iTunes AAC Playback: The DEH-P7700MP can play CDs with AAC files ripped using Apple's iTunes Media Player. This unit can play AAC files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. AAC files with a transmission rate from 16-320 kbps are supported.

Note: This unit can play "unprotected" AAC files ripped into iTunes, but it cannot play the "protected" AAC files downloaded from the online iTunes Music Store.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported.

Compression and BMX Functions: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "BMX" functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the CD player. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortion caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "BMX" function controls sound reverberations to give playback a fuller sound.

CD-R/CD-RW Skip Function: Some CD-R/W recorders allow you to assign skip ID tags to tracks that you never want to hear. When a track has been assigned a track skip ID, compatible units will recognize the skip ID information and skip over that track. This player recognizes track skip IDs, so CD-R and CD-RW discs with skip ID information will be played back as intended.

Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 48 discs. When a compatible changer is connected, titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs in the changer.

Optional Aux Input: When used with item 130CDRB10 (sold separately) or item 130CDRB20 (sold separately), this unit can accept input from an auxiliary source, such as a portable CD or MD player. When item 130CDRB10 is used, a CD changer cannot be connected to this unit. Item 130CDRB20 allows you to connect an optional Pioneer CD changer and an auxiliary source to this unit.

Dimmer Feature: When the illumination wire of this unit receives power and the dimmer feature has been turned on in the "Initial Setting" menu, the display will dim to a preset level. When the power and constant wires are connected and the illumination wire is supplied with voltage (when you turn your lights on), the button illumination remains on even if the unit is turned off completely.

Warning Tone: If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within four seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. This feature can be turned On or Off.

Changer Controls

ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.

Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs.

Disc Title List: This feature allows you to display disc titles that you have entered. From the list, you can select a disc for playback.

CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 14 characters may be scrolled to reveal the entire string of text.

CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

DVD Operation: This unit can control an optional Pioneer DVD player or DVD changer.

Note

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has not been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. This unit's clock is "keyed" only when the Clock Display has been turned on. When power is supplied to both power wires and the illumination wire is not receiving voltage, nothing illuminates if the Clock Display has not been turned on and the unit is off.

Note: When the power and constant wires are connected and the illumination wire is supplied with voltage (when you turn your lights on), the button illumination remains on even if the unit is turned off completely.
